Love the designs, Jessica! In particular, your Sylvester and Patunia Pig. It's so awesome that they chose you for this project. The Looney Tunes are really what defined American animation for so long, and your updates feel rooted in that but also fresh and playful. Thanks for all the inspiration. :)

Hello. I apologize for asking this somewhat unrelated question, but I found some storyboards for "The Looney Tunes Show" online, albeit from before they fired much of the crew late last year. In them, there was a new character - a female duck named Marisol - who was sitting alongside Lola watching television. I had a few questions about that if you could answer them.

One: Is Lola going to be in the series?

Two: Is Marisol? If so, was she created for the series or did she actually come from somewhere else?

Three: Are there any other new Looney Tunes characters?

Thanks in advance! I actually love the designs, despite what certain "animation historians" think.

I hope there is not Lola Bunny in this show. I would prefer Honey Bunny instead.

Bugs' design is growing on me, though I still think his body is very short we'll see how it works when it's animated.

Daffy looks pretty great.

And I really like how you draw Petunia, even if the light in her head doesn't let us see the design perfectly. In fact I just love the fact that Petunia is in the show to begin with. We don't see a lot of Petunia or even Porky in the recent merchandising.

This is great They should have used this as the promotional image. Daffy looks so lovable! I feel bad about my previous comment on brew. It's the 80th anniversary of Warner Bros Animation, so it's only natural to do this, like when Tiny Toons premiered in 1990. I can't wait to see the designs in motion and Eric do Marvin. Good Job!

I like the designs, but I was wondering, have any of the animators considered putting any of the characters from the 90s Warner Animation Renaissance (EG, the Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid, the Tiny Toons cast, etcetera) in as cameos. If not, could you suggest it to them?

Because, I really think that you could win the sceptics over with that, because a lot of them grew up with those cartoons (Including me), watching them alongside the classic Looney Tunes cartoons and loving them just as much.

So, yeah, could you please pass it on?

Hi Jessica! Just saw you featured on CBC - wanted to say that I LOVE your re-designs! I've been a life-long Looney Tunes fan, and I think you've done such a wonderful and pitch-perfect job. (Also especially proud that a Canadian gal is behind all of this!) You've certainly earned yourself a new fan, and I look forward to following your work!

Dear Jessica:

I'm an animation fan who's been following the media coverage of the "controversy" about this redesign.

Let me try to make two points that may seem contradictory:

1. I think the new show is a terrible idea. I also think Space Jam was a terrible idea, as was the Duxorcist, and most of the Tiny Toon Adventures. That being said, I can't support the fact that you're making alterations to characters that are cultural icons for the last century.

2. None of that means I hate you or disrespect your work. You were given a large and important project and you've followed it through. While I disagree with the principles behind it, it's obvious that you're very talented, and as an Ottawa person and an animation buff, it's thrilling to know someone from here was involved in something so important.

So congratulations. And boo. I'm hoping that you can take the momentum you gain from this project and do something that is truly new, original, and creative that you can be totally proud of. I'll be the first one to applaud.

8:14 AM
Blogger Roberto González said...

Exactly, why was the Duxorcist a terrible idea? I thought that was pretty good. Maybe not the best animation but the plot is really similar to the spirit of the original LT.

Space Jam, on the other hand...

Blogger Jorge Garrido said...

I like your designs, Jessica, and let me tell you why. The one thing Looney Tunes have been lacking since the 60s have been a personal, unique creator or artist's point of view. When people say you "changed" the Looney Tunes, what they really mean is that you didn't use the pre-approved post 90s Darrel Van Citters designs (which would have looked alien in the 70s and 80s. To me those 90s designs everyone is used to look like more angular, less cool versions of mid 50s Chuck Jones, but even Chuck Jones stopped drawing them like that by the late 50s.)

By not using these pre-fab Looney Tunes and actually drawing them in your own unique (albeit informed by cartoonists and designers of the past) style, you've brought back the unique and specific artist's point of view and drawing style to Looney Tunes.

And thank God for that, because I think you're basically perfect for that. These characters need that adrenaline shot.

I can't believe Cerveone and his bosses allowed it, though! If it was me, though, I would have gone further. I would have created three units from three different creators to do with these characters what they will. Maybe one by you, one by John K, and one by Brad Bird. But the fact we got an actual redesign with legitimately new ideas is astounding.

12:19 PM
Blogger Jorge Garrido said...

Also, I actually LIKE the suburban conceit of the series. To me it could be more like the classic comics, where Porky lived next door to Bugs.

In fact, you could even take cues from the classic comics on how to make these characters interact. Hell, if you can't show Yosemite Sam firing guns, maybe pay tribute to the classic comics and make him shoot gumdrops. Maybe Porky and Bugs could go on Gottfredson or Barks-style adventures.

You know how the Disney comics were way, way better than the Disney cartoons, but the WB comics weren't better than the WB cartoons? Well, maybe you could use this comic book setting to make the new cartoons even better than the WB cartoons. That way the show could simultaneously be both something new and an homage to something old (but taken further.)

Does that make sense?

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2010/05/26/ottawa-looney-tunes-new-design-bortuski.html

I'm cautiously optimistic about this new Looney Tunes show. I still think that getting the originals back on television is much more important than remakes. Yesterday's kids loved them, and today's would too. With that said, I hope this is a good show.

I like how you tried to accent features of the characters you liked, but I have to say I think Bugs' feet are a little too simplified in comparison with the rest of his body. I think that might be why they stand out so much to me, though I am curious to see how they look in a walk cycle.

And I like the use of a purple outline on Daffy, it sorta takes the place of the white outlines that would appear whenever a part of his body overlapped with another, but makes the transition less jarring and more a part of his design.

As for Bugs being mauve, I guess when your two main characters are black and grey you need to add a splash of colour in somewhere eh?

Can't say I'll watch the show, but I think I understand some of your design choices (And I have to add, your original characters are really quite charming).

Hello Jessica,

Congratulations on your Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck designs.
Looking forward to see the other characters.
I read the comments on Cartoonbrew about your new designs. No matter what you do, you can never please everyone. Besides I don't think you can judge a cartoon character until you've seen him/her in action.

I tried to contact you directly but I couldn't find your email address anywhere.
I wanted to let you know I wrote a little article on the new Bugs Bunny design you're working on:

@Roberto González, unfortunately, Lola Bunny appeared in her worst ever version... I miss Honey Bunny, in my opinion she's much better to play a role of Bugs Bunny's girlfriend.

For those who don't know who is Honey Bunny: honeybunnyworld.com - On the website there is even a more-or-less complete biography of this character, plus some fan-made designs of her for The Looney Tunes Show.

The 2nd season looks a little better but still it's nothing that such a fan of good old classic Looney Tunes like me could accept. For me, The Looney Tunes Show is a visual tragedy and it has nothing to do with what classic Looney Tunes used to be.

I heard Petunia Pig won't appear in this season, is that true?

Are ANY characters apart from 'standard set' planned to appear in The Looney Tunes Show? I don't know, maybe Honey Bunny, Daisy Lou, Melissa Duck, Daphne Duck (or any other anyone's girlfriend), Cicero Pig... any?
